Former Wofford stars Andrew Hewitt (Dorman), left, and Jerome Hall, right, present Spartanburg Fellowship of Christian Athletes area leader Bill Owens with a check for $20,000. Hewitt and Hall earned the top prize in a golf tournament at the BMW Pro-Am last Monday.
Jerome Hall is certain that he and fellow Spartanburg resident Andrew Hewitt had a little help while competing in a charity tournament that kicked off the BMW Pro-Am last Monday at Bright’s Creek Golf Club in Columbus, N.C.
Despite persistent wind gusts often in excess of 40 miles per hour, Hall and Hewitt played well enough to beat 35 other teams and win the 18-hole event.
"When you start thinking about some of the putts that went in, especially for me, there truly had to have been some divine intervention," said Hall, a former basketball standout at Wofford who is among the school’s all-time scoring leaders.
Hall and Hewitt finished the round with a 10-under-par score, winning the tournament’s top prize of $20,000, which will be donated to the Spartanburg Fellowship of Christian Athletes.
"We couldn’t have asked for anything better than to be able to help the FCA in such a wonderful way," Hewitt said. "I’m glad that they can use (the winnings) to glorify the Lord."
Hall and Hewitt each had three birdies and an eagle while winning the tournament by three strokes. They played with PGA pro Zoran Zorkic of Humble, Texas, but only used his score on one hole.
"(Zorkic) had a tough round, but he helped us out a ton," Hall said. "He would tell us things like which club to use, and he gave us a lot of good advice."
Hewitt, a 2002 graduate of Dorman High School who played golf and baseball at Wofford, raised the $3,000 tournament entry fee. Even if he and Hall didn’t win, $1,500 would have been donated back to the local FCA ministry.
"We could have never done it if it weren’t for all the people who supported us and the FCA with their contributions," Hewitt said. "What they did was something special."
The Spartanburg FCA is expected to receive the $20,000 check in July.
"For us, locally, it’s such a huge boost," FCA area leader Bill Owens said. "Every non-profit Christian organization or ministry is always walking a very fine line financially, so that kind of money will go a long way towards giving us a little bit of breathing room. It’s just an incredible blessing." |
